September is creeping in, bringing us that much closer to the end of 2025. The chilly air is now greeting us in the mornings and evenings, and the humidity is finally starting to mellow. Fall for me means one step closer to some of the coziest times of the year. As I’ve been sketching out my own September rhythms, I’ve found myself circling a handful of new book releases that feel just right for this season: books that bend genres, reimagine history, and remind us what it means to be alive and connected.

Here are five that deserve a place on your reading list:

It’s Me They Follow – Out September 23

This one feels like a mirror held up to the digital age: what happens when devotion online bleeds into obsession, and who gets to control the narrative of their own life? With sharp insight and tension that builds quietly, It’s Me They Follow asks urgent questions about identity, parasocial relationships, and the cost of being seen.

Will There Ever Be Another You – Out September 23

Equal parts elegy and love song, this novel leans into memory, grief, and the ache of impermanence. It’s a story about the people we lose and the imprint they leave behind—a perfect September read for anyone carrying tenderness into the fall.

Little Movements – Out Now!

Sometimes it’s the smallest gestures that change everything. Little Movements is a novel of subtle revolutions; friendships shifting, family ties fraying and mending, the quiet decision to choose joy in difficult times. It’s understated, but in the best way, reminding us that transformation doesn’t always announce itself loudly.

Nobody Can Give You Freedom: The Political Life of Malcolm X – Out Now!

Malcolm X remains one of the most powerful and misunderstood figures in U.S. history. This new biography traces his political life with nuance, refusing to simplify his legacy into easy soundbites. It’s a necessary read for anyone invested in liberation movements, political thought, and the ways Black leaders are remembered, or too often misremembered.

Midnight Timetable: A Novel in Ghost Stories – Out September 30

As the evenings begin to stretch beyond the days, this book is one I’m looking forward to cherishing in the evenings. It’s a collection of ghost stories that connect like little stops along a journey. I’m excited to dive in and make each evening a new trip to strange adventures beyond our world.

Why These Books Matter

My favorite thing about having a TBR list like this is that it serves as a sampler. Each book has something different on the table. I get to venture into new stories of intimacy, history, the uncanny, and more. As different as they may be, they all bring in the energy of September and fall; transition, reckonings, and the liminal spaces that shape who we are. Whether you’re looking for political education, spooky storytelling, or reflections on love and change, I hope you consider adding these to your TBR for some companionship for the month ahead.

So brew something warm, clear a space in your bag, and let September be a month of turning pages that turn you right back toward yourself.
